Where did the service project take place: Myerstown Junior Legion Field
Who were your partners: Mason Musser and Courtney Miller; Ryan Weirback and Dalton Debelius
How many participants did you involve: about 100 members of the community
Describe, in detail, what your project entailed: Our project started off by coming up with the idea of having a home run derby. The derby would raise money and canned good for local food bank in our area. The food bank is the Lebanon County Christian Ministries, which we will be volunteering at on May 19th. Now with our plan we started to make flyers and posting them around the community and our school districts with the permission of our principal and community officials. With our advertising out and our date set, we now started getting supplies and things ready. We were selling baked goods, drinks, snacks, and hot dogs. Also we got the supplies for the derby: baseball, bats, tees, and a glove for the pitcher. As the Derby approached, we were spreading the word and becoming excited. When it came we had a great success. We had many people show up and it was fun, but hard work. We sold, played, and raised many goods. The debate was a success. Now we have many goods to give to the Lebanon County Christians Ministries.

How is your project relevant to this season’s Global Debates topic: Our project is relevant because the global debates projects are dealing with climate change adaptation and a problem due to climates is starvation. Our home run derby was raising money and canned goods for starving people in our area so it is relevant to this season’s Global Debate
Did you have any pres or media coverage? If so, describe their involvement and how you think they helped spread your message. We had no pres but one of our students at ELCO high school taped it for us.
Did any elected leaders participate? Why do you think it is critical for them to support this issue (beyond the fact that everyone should care about the environment!)? We did not have any elected officials but our principal and super attendants were there. I think it is critical because we should have support from the community on our plan and this issue because it is a big deal. These issues are important and should be heard.
What impact did this project have on your community, the people you helped, or the organization(s) you partnered with? The impact on the community is that we have informed them on the issues and they are now more aware of the issues outside of our nation. They also gave donations and had the impact of helping other nations. The people we actually helped were impacted by having food to eat for about a couple days. This is a huge impact to them because it lifts the burden of finding food off of them. It also impacted the Lebanon County Christian Ministries by getting donations.
What impact did this project have on you and your team? This project has impacted our group by showing us the real issues outside of our nation. It has informed us on the details and horrors of Ethiopia and how much they struggle everyday due to their issues. It also impacted us by teaching us hard work and persistence.
Do you plan on following up with your service project? How will you make the impact last? We plan on trying to follow up by keep raising money and canned goods to make an impact in our community. We want to keep it going by spreading the message to younger kids and have them raise money and food to keep it going.
